Spittal Community Award presented to Central Heritage Society
The Central Heritage Society received the Dr. David Spittal Community Award, named for SWU’s former president. The society was recognized for their active role in promoting the town of Central as a destination for history and tourism during the annual Central State of Central dinner March 20 at the Central campus. A group of dedicated citizens who play an active role in promoting the town of Central as a history and tourism destination became the 2014 recipient of the Dr. David Spittal Community Award, named for Southern Wesleyan University’s former president, who retired in 2011.
The award was presented to Central Heritage Society by Joey Martin, chairman of the Central Area Business Council, during the 2014 State of Central dinner, a Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce event held March 20 at the Founders, located on the university’s campus in Central.
During the presentation, Martin praised the society for its efforts to enhance the town of Central and heighten awareness of the area’s rich heritage.
“Visitors can learn about history in the Central History Museum and enjoy the established gardens there,” Martin said, adding that two quilts are on display in conjunction with the Quilt Heritage Trail, which encompasses Pickens, Oconee and Anderson counties. Martin noted that the society was instrumental in placing Central on the South Carolina Heritage Corridor, promoting of Freedom’s Hill Church, a historic church on Southern Wesleyan’s campus, the naming of the Samuel Maverick Bridge and their ongoing support of the Central Railroad Festival.
Recipients of the Dr. David Spittal Community Award make significant contributions to the greater good of the Central community and the Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce, with an emphasis on citizenship and service; demonstrate enthusiasm, leadership, initiative, idealism, commitment, innovation and vision; consistently illustrate the ability to develop positive relationships and the skill to build consensus among community leaders; and effectively utilize resources outside the scope of employment and responsibility. Recipients or their employers must be a member in good standing of the Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce.
