SWU Fine Arts Delivers a Dazzling Anastasia & Sets the Stage for a Showstopping Season Ahead

May 22, 2025 | Fine Arts
CENTRAL, S.C. — The Southern Wesleyan University Division of Music and Fine Arts delivered a stunning and powerful production of Anastasia March 27–29, 2025, in the Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center.
Directed by Dr. Amber James, Department of Music Coordinator and Associate Professor of Music, Anastasia featured 25 student performers, including four ballet dancers, and was supported by a 13-member orchestra under the direction of Dr. Samuel Miller, Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities. The cast was led by Carolin Justus in the role of Anya and Gavin Cunningham as Dmitry, with a backstage crew of more than 35 students contributing to the set, lighting, and costume design.
“The music of Anastasia felt appropriately beautiful and complex to follow the work of Stephen Sondheim, and it was another movie musical set in the early 20th century,” said Dr. James. “I also wanted this year’s show to connect more with our community’s children, and a musical based on a children’s animated film seemed like the perfect opportunity. While there is comedy woven throughout, Anastasia doesn’t shy away from serious subjects like revolution, loss, and the longing for home and identity. Our students handled the emotional weight of these characters with remarkable maturity and depth.”
The Division of Music and Fine Arts extends heartfelt thanks to all who made this production possible, including sponsors: ML Osteen, Julia Osteen, The Budd Group, Harvest Home Services, Kannapolis First Wesleyan Church, HIS Radio 89.3, LightSound Production, J Davis Construction, Sarah Amick Photography, Cheryl’s Dance Studio, Tony Payne from Farm Bureau Insurance, and Amber James Voice and Piano Lessons.
Up next, the Division of Music and Fine Arts invites singers and dancers to audition for Showstopper Spectacular: Jukebox Junction, coming October 3–4, 2025. Auditions are open now through Saturday, May 31, and will be accepted virtually. Performers should prepare a 1950s or 1960s-style song that highlights their vocal or dance ability—or both. Participants may submit up to 1 minute and 30 seconds of a song, dance, or a combination, with separate videos preferred for those auditioning as both a singer and dancer. Singing should be accompanied by a backing track rather than performed “a cappella.” This high-energy showcase will feature timeless hits and dynamic choreography with a throwback vibe in what promises to be an unforgettable evening of entertainment. Looking ahead to Spring 2026, the major production will be The Prince of Egypt, a musical retelling of the biblical story of Moses. With music by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell) and a story of faith, freedom, and destiny, this inspiring production promises to be one of the most powerful performances yet.
