Central, SC — Southern Wesleyan University Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, Dr. Brad Bowen, led a group of criminal justice and history students to the South Carolina General Assembly to observe the lawmaking process. The students received a behind-the-scenes Senate floor tour from Senate President Thomas Alexander’s office, saw the Sword of State, and watched the House of Representatives conduct official business. The group met with the Senate Sergeant at Arms to learn about the ceremonial and practical role of enforcing decorum in the Senate chamber and providing security for Senators and official events.

“SWU students gained valuable knowledge and insight into the lawmaking process during our trip to the South Carolina General Assembly,” said Dr. Brad Bowen. “Seeing first-hand how ideas are debated, amended, and passed in a legislative body is an amazing way for students to take what they learn in the classroom and experience it in real life. We strive for our students to have a deep understanding of the functions of government and an appreciation for how public policy is shaped, and this trip exceeded our expectations. We’re grateful for every person who made our visit to Columbia memorable and educational.”
