Character Formation, Divine Direction: SWU Grad Writes Her Way Forward
When Jahanna Schwab graduated from Southern Wesleyan University in 2020 with an English degree, she stepped into a world locked down by COVID-19. But the skills and spiritual formation she gained at SWU prepared her for an unexpected journey that would lead through podcast marketing, Montessori school communications, youth nonprofit work, and ultimately to a role combining creativity and ministry.
“I’m doing communications and fundraising, which is adjacent to my degree,” Schwab reflects. “But SWU formed me as a person, as a Christian, and as a worker – beyond just acquiring skills or knowledge. It helped me form who I want to be in the world.”
After graduation, Schwab landed a content writing role with Rise25, crafting marketing copy for over 25 podcast clients. When she and her husband moved to Washington D.C., she transitioned to communications work at a Montessori school, where she was quickly promoted to Director of Communications and Events.
Seeking more direct community impact, Schwab then joined Phoenix Bikes, a nonprofit providing education programs through bike mechanics to underserved youth in South Arlington. As Development and Communications Manager, she expanded grant revenue and enhanced the organization’s local presence.
Her SWU English education proved invaluable in these roles. “Writing is a huge part of my job,” Schwab explains. “Grant writing requires creative nonfiction storytelling. I’ve written multiple fundraising campaigns where I’ve interviewed students, gathered data, and written it as a creative nonfiction story that’s raised money for the organization. That brings me back to my non-fiction prose and creative writing classes at SWU.”
While each professional step brought success – expanding grant revenue, enhancing organizational presence, and improving processes – Schwab sensed God writing a new chapter in her story. In early 2024, she felt called to pivot her career toward ministry, accepting a role as project manager and writer with Daily Prayer Project, a liturgical publication featuring guided prayers, scripture, music, poetry, and art.
