Fine-tune your skills to lead a music ministry with a Church Music degree

Looking to develop your musical skills in order to lead congregational worship in a church setting? The Bachelor of Music in Church Music prepares you to serve as ministers of music in churches with comprehensive music programs spanning children and adults as well as choral and instrumental music. The Church Music major focuses on musicianship, while the Christian Worship major focuses more on theology and church history.

Excellence in Music and Leadership

The church music ministry today is a multifaceted world! As a church music major at SWU, you will work toward the highest levels of competence in choral, instrumental, and small ensemble leadership. In our church music degree program, you will apply principles of the Christian faith in different musical and life settings. Our highly skilled and attentive professors will guide and inspire you in small group and one-on-one settings to achieve the plan God has for your musical, spiritual, and intellectual life. Ultimately, you will learn to communicate the love of Christ and music in the church and para-church setting through coursework and significant experience in real life settings.

Is the Church Music major right for you?

You probably enjoyed your musical experience at church or school during your middle school and/or high school years. Your church’s worship leader/music minister showed you how powerful God’s Word coupled with music could be. This major is right for you if you are passionate about serving Jesus Christ through music, wish to sharpen your skills as a musician, and wish to be skilled at helping others encounter the power of Christ through music.

Our church music majors have directed church choirs in the surrounding area, led music at local churches, conducted master classes sponsored by the South Carolina American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), and participated in the South Carolina honor ensembles.
