Dean urges students to use diplomas wisely

Students have a responsibility to use their education to help others, Dr. Gloria Bell told graduates.

Bell, a longtime faculty member of Southern Wesleyan University, addressed the university’s 2005 spring graduating class at two graduation ceremonies May 7. During the first ceremony, she asked the students to use their educations to help their communities.

“It’s an achievement you can be proud of,” Bell said. “but with a diploma comes responsibility.”

The Bible is full of ordinary object that are used in extraordinary ways, she said. Students can use ordinary objects such as a ledger, a book, a piano or a periodic table to have a great impact on the world around them, Bell said.

“A diploma is not a no-strings-attached document,” she said.

Bell also addressed the afternoon graduates, asking students to prioritize service to others.

“Our time is filled up with necessary things. We have no free time,”
she said. “Free time is a myth. We must make the choices necessary to keep those first things first.”

She asked students to make time for the truly important things in life.

Bell, academic vice president and dean, will retire at the end of this academic year. A resident of Clemson, Bell earned her A.B. at Southern Wesleyan University (formerly Central Wesleyan College); her M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado.

She has been a member of the Southern Wesleyan University faculty since 1977. Bell’s work has appeared in numerous publications and she has completed many academic presentations.

Southern Wesleyan University awarded Bell an honorary doctor of humanities degree during the graduation ceremonies.

The university had two separate graduation ceremonies at Walden Tysinger Gymnasium. The 10:30 a.m. ceremony was for graduating students from the university’s Central and Greenville locations earning associate’s and bachelor’s degrees, and for students from all locations earning Master of Science, Master of Ministry or Master of Business Administration degrees. The 3 p.m. ceremony was for students from the university’s Charleston, Columbia and North Augusta locations earning associate’s and bachelor’s degrees, as well as for students from all locations earning Master of Education degrees.

The university conferred about 345 degrees, according to university registrar Rock McCaskill. The average age of the graduates is 35, he said.
