FAFSA for Online Students

FAFSA Code: 003422

Complete the FAFSA at studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa. (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA must be submitted each year to determine eligibility for need-based grants, work, and loans.

NOTE: The 2024 FAFSA application does not open until December 2023.

  1. Locate your previous year tax returns:
    1. For students enrolling at SWU for the first time in Spring 2022 or Summer 2022 terms: Locate your completed 2019 federal tax returns for both the student and either parents or spouse (as appropriate) in order to complete the 2021-2022 FAFSA.
    2. For current students or students enrolling for the first time at SWU in Fall 2022: Locate your completed 2020 federal tax returns for both the student and either parents or spouse (as appropriate) in order to complete the 2022-2023 FAFSA.
  2. File the FAFSA electronically (studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa) and instead of entering the students and parents tax information manually, click on “LINK TO IRS.” The tax information will automatically be entered from the Internal Revenue Service database onto the FAFSA.

This should allow for accurate information to be submitted and if selected for verification, this should greatly reduce the amount of time and effort needed to complete requirements for financial aid processing, awarding, and notification.

You are unable to use this IRS option if any of the following apply:

  1. You are married and filed separately.
  2. If a parent has a change of marital status after December 31, 2018 (for the 2021-2022 FAFSA) or December 31, 2019 (for the 2022-2023 FAFSA).

If the student is a South Carolina resident and if the FAFSA is not completed by June 30, the student will lose eligibility for the South Carolina Tuition Grant.
