New Student Orientation Schedule

Saturday, January 4

 

10:00AM – 12:00PM Orientation Registration (Campus Life Center)

Come and take care of any outstanding business needs in one place.  We will have tables throughout the International Hallway for you to take care of billing questions, Financial Aid, Student ID, log in information, housing information, or any other general question that you need to have answered as you begin your new journey here at SWU.  This is also where you will register for New Student Orientation and get your final agenda for the weekend.  We’ll be expecting you!

Residence Hall Check-In (Campus Life Center)

Go directly to the Jennings Campus Life Center to get instructions about your keys.   From there you can get settled into your room.  Residence Life Staff will be on hand in your residence halls to help you get oriented to your living area.

12:00PM Lunch (The Founders)

There will be a catered lunch where you can get something to eat with other parents and students who are new to our community as well as hear about some great resources on campus. 

12:30 – 2:00PM  Welcome/Resource Panel/Passing the Mantle

While you finish your lunch, you will hear from several significant resources on campus. This will be concluded with a special SWU tradition called Passing the Mantle which involves both parents and students.  This will serve as the conclusion of the parent part of orientation. 

2:00PM Women’s Basketball Game (Historic Tysinger Gym)

As a group, we will head over to the Historic Tysinger Gym to watch our women’s basketball team compete.

4:00PM Free Time        

This is a time to finish setting up your room or taking care of other things on campus. There will be board games available down in Blue Hill as well as snacks.

5:00  Dinner & Games (The Fountain)

Commuters can park in the parking lot across from Child’s Hall in Visitor Parking.  We will carpool to the home of Dr. Chris Confer where we’ll enjoy a casual meal, as well as some group games to get to know each other.


Sunday, January 5

9:30 – 10:30AM   Continental  Breakfast (Dining Commons)

10:00AM – 12:00PM Attend a Local Church (Various Locations)

We encourage you to visit one of our many local churches to find a church home. Representatives from several churches will meet you at the flagpoles and provide transportation.  Consult the list of churches for service times and transportation in your orientation packet. 

12:00 –1:30PM Sunday Brunch (Dining Commons)

1:00 – 5:00PM Various Community Activities

There will be various activities hosted by Residence Life to get you out into the local community. This event is for all new students. Come to the lobby of Joiner-Hilson to sign up for an excursion in the local community. 

5:00 – 6:30PM  Dinner (Warrior Court)

6:30 – 9:00PM Games, Movies and Fire Pit (Joiner-Hilson)

Come join returning students in the lobby area of Joiner Hilson for a fun night of games, a movie in the theater, s’mores at the fire pit, and more. 


Monday January 6

7:00 – 8:00AM Breakfast (Dining Commons)

9:30AM Preparing for Academic Success at SWU (Newby 116)

Come get your log-in for all things “SWU.”  In this workshop you will log into MySWU and go for a tour. You will also find out about how to check your SWU email, navigate Canvas (find out where you syllabi are located) and Papercut, and download the Chapel Attendance App.           

10:30AM Academic Advising and Registration (Newby 118)

Come and meet your academic advisor. You will work to adjust or create your academic schedule for the semester. This is also a time to get to know others from your major and to ask any questions that you might have about starting your academic journey here at SWU.

1:00PM Campus Tour (Fountain Square)

This tour is specially designed to help you find your classes at SWU.  A member of our Admissions staff will meet you in the Admissions Office lobby and take you on a guided tour, highlighting where your classes will be held.

1:30PM School of Business Inbound Assessment (Newby 116, Business Majors only)

5:30 – 7:30PM  Dinner (Dining Commons) 

8PM Event at Blue Hill Coffee & Tea Co.


Tuesday, January 13 

7:00PM – 9:00PM  Mandatory Residence Hall Meeting (Your Residence Hall Lobby)

Resident Life staff will meet with you to help you get acclimated and to answer questions about your living area.  It is very important that ALL resident students attend this hall meeting.
